Gutter Maintenance: A Season-by-Season Guide for Illinois Homes

Nobody is excited about gutters. But of all the systems on the outside of a house, they may have the widest blast radius when they fail — because their whole job is moving water away from the two places water does the most expensive damage: your roof edge and your foundation. Here is a practical rhythm for keeping them working, and how to tell when maintenance is not enough.

What gutters are actually protecting

A roof sheds a remarkable volume of water in a heavy storm, and gutters decide where it goes. Working gutters carry it to downspouts and away from the house. Clogged or broken gutters dump it straight down along the foundation, where it saturates the soil, seeps into basements and crawlspaces, and over time undermines the foundation itself. Overflowing gutters also back water up under the roof edge, where it rots fascia and soffit. The gutter is cheap; what it protects is not.

Spring: clear out what winter left

After the last freeze, clear the debris that accumulated over winter and check that water runs freely to every downspout. Spring is also the moment to look for damage the cold caused — sagging sections, joints pulled apart, or fasteners that worked loose under the weight of ice. Run a hose into the gutter and watch where the water actually goes; it is the fastest way to find a problem.

Summer: check the flow and the pitch

During a good summer downpour, step outside and look. Water pouring over the front edge means a clog or a gutter that is undersized for the roof. Water pooling in a section that never drains means the pitch is off. Water spilling at a joint means a failed seam. Watching gutters work in real rain tells you more in two minutes than an inspection on a dry day.

Fall: the important one

Fall is the big cleaning, and timing matters — wait until most of the leaves are actually down, or you will just be doing it twice. Clear the gutters and the downspouts, and make sure water exits well away from the foundation rather than pooling next to it. This one matters more than the others because gutters full of wet leaves going into a freeze is precisely how ice dams start.

Winter: watch for ice dams

An ice dam forms when heat escaping into the attic melts snow on the upper roof, the water runs down to the cold eave, and it refreezes into a ridge of ice. That ridge traps meltwater behind it, and trapped water backs up under the shingles and into the house. Big icicles along the eave are the visible symptom. Clean gutters help, but the real fix is usually attic insulation and ventilation — because the underlying problem is heat where it should not be.

When cleaning is not the answer

Some signs mean a gutter needs repair or replacement rather than another cleaning: sections visibly sagging or pulling away from the fascia, seams that leak no matter what you seal them with, rust or cracks along the trough, rotted wood behind the gutter, or persistent water in the basement after storms. Older sectional gutters have a joint every several feet, and every joint is a future leak — one reason seamless gutters have largely replaced them.

A note on safety

Most gutter work happens on a ladder, and ladder falls are one of the more common ways homeowners get seriously hurt. If your home is more than one story, if the ground is soft or uneven, or if you are not completely steady on a ladder, this is genuinely a job worth handing to someone who does it routinely and is set up for it.
